GLASS RECYCLING AND ITS IMPORTANCE…
THE FACTS
Currently the UK recycles around of 70% of container glass such as bottles and jars. Manufacturers, WRAP (Waste and Resources Action Programme) and British Glass have set a target of 90% recycling by 2030.
Did you know that glass is 100% recyclable and can be renewed endlessly with no loss of quality. To make new glass involves four main ingredients; sand, soda ash, limestone and other additives for colour or special treatments. To obtain these materials involves quarrying, this uses up natural resources and expenditure of energy for extraction and processing.
Each tonne of glass recycled saves approximately 1.2 tonnes of raw materials. For every tonne of glass recycled around 580kg CO2 is saved from the supply chain with air pollution reduced by 20% and water pollution cut by 50%!
As you can see, recycling glass is beneficial to the environment, lessening our use of non-renewable fossil fuels and cutting CO2 from the production and transportation process.
